[원어민 영어 1, 영어원서읽기] Ch1. A long walk to water

이제 원어민처럼 말하고 듣고 쓰기 위해 영어소설 읽기(Reading) (도서: A long walk to water)을 통해 Listening, Speaking, Writing의 총체적인 학습을 하실 겁니다. 

 

제가 영어공부 학습법에서 설명을 드린 적이 있습니다. Reading을 통해 많이 읽으셔야 Speaking이라는 Output이 그나마 조금 나올 겁니다. 우리가 멍청해서가 아니라 정말 우리가 상상하는 그 이상으로 읽어주셔야 (같은 책 50번, 100번 반복하셔도 되고 다른 책을 50권 이상 접하면서 여러 번 읽어주는 방식을 거치면 영어 뉘앙스도 느끼고 암기하지 않더라도 저절로 통째 암기가 되실 겁니다.)합니다.

 

그래야 저절로 암기된 문장이 그 상황과 유사하게 또는 똑같이 맞닥뜨렸을 때 영어가 입에서 튀어나오게 되어 있습니다. 참 쉽지 않은 일입니다. 처음에는 그렇습니다. 그렇지만 내가 관심을 가질 만한 책을 한 권 선정해서 읽어보시는 것을 추천드립니다. 아직 책 선정을 못 하셨다면, 제 블로그에서 알려주는 책을 통해 같이 읽고, 공부해서 내 것으로 만들어 보도록 했으면 합니다.

 

먼저 얼마나 제가 Reading이 중요한지, 그리고 그러한 방법을 이전의 글에서 기재를 해두었으니 아래 링크를 통해 한번 읽어보시고 시작해 주세요. 

 

외국인이 무슨 말 하는지 하나도 안 들려서 큰일이에요.

 

이번에 시작할 책은 초중급자도 읽기 쉬운 'A long walk to water'이라는 책을 선정하여 학습해 보도록 하겠습니다. 이 책뿐만 아니라 다른 책도 번갈아서 이 블로그에 올릴 예정이니 매일 학습하는 데 도움이 되시길 바라겠습니다. 제 블로그를 통해 직장인, 사회인이라면 출퇴근 시, 점심시간에 짬을 내서 자주 봐주시면 될 것 같습니다.

Southern Sudan, 2008

2008년, 남수단

 

Going was easy. Going, the big plastic container held only air.

가는 길은 수월했다. 갈 때는 비어있는 큰 플라스틱 통만 들고 갔다.

Tall for her eleven years, Nya could switch the handle from one hand to the other, swing the container by her side, or cradle it in both arms. 

11살짜리 나야는 양손으로 번갈아 들거나 안고 걸어가면 되었다.

 

She could even drag it behind her, bumping it against the ground and raising a tiny cloud of dust with each step.

뒤에서 질질 끌고 가니 걸음을 옮길 때마다 통이 땅에도 부딪히고 작은 먼지가 일었다.

 

There was little weight, going. There was only heat, the sun already baking the air, even though it was long before noon.

갈 때는 통이 거의 무게감이 없었지만, 정오가 되지 않았는데도 익을듯한 열이 감돌았다.

It would take her half the morning if she didn't stop on the way. Heat. Time. And thorns.

도중에 쉬지 않아도 아침 반나절은 걸릴 터였다. 더위. 시간 그리고 가시들뿐.

 

Southern Sudan, 1985

1985년, 남수단

 

Salva sat cross-legged on the bench. He kept his head turned toward the front, hands folded, back perfectly straight.

살바는 책상다리를 하고 벤치에 앉았다. 고개는 정면으로 향하고 양손은 모으고 허리는 곧게 폈다. 

 

Everything about him was paying attention to the teacher-everything except his eyes and his mind.

선생님에게 집중을 했지만, 눈과 마음은 딴 데 가 있었다.

 

His eyes kept flicking toward the window, through which he could see the road. The road home.

창문 바깥 도로를 향해 두 눈이 깜빡이고 있었다. 집으로 가는 길.

 

Just a little while longer-a few minutes more-and he would be walking on that road.

조금만 더 있으면, 몇 분만 더 지나면 살바는 그 길을 걸어 집으로 갈 터였다.

 

The teacher droned on with the lesson, about the Arabic language. Salve spoke the language of his Dinka tribe at home.

선생님은 아랍어에 대해 지겹게 설명을 했다. 살바는 집에서는 딩카 부족어로 말했다.

 

But in school he learned Arabic, the official language of the Sudanese government far away to the north. 

하지만 학교에서는 아랍어를 배웠다. 멀리 북부에 있는 수단 정부의 공식적인 언어이기 때문이다.

 

Eleven years old on his last birthday, Salve was a good student.

열한 살이 된 살바는 모범생이었다.

 

He already knew the lesson, which was why he was letting his mind wander down the road ahead of his body.

이미 수업 내용을 알았고, 길에 한눈을 파는 것도 그 때문이었다.

 

Salva was well aware of how lucky he was to be able to go to school. 

살바는 학교에라도 가까스로 다닐 수 있는 것이 얼마나 행운인지를 잘 알고 있었다.

He could not attend the entire year, because during the dry season his family moved away from their village.

일 년 내내 학교에 다지는 못했다. 왜냐하면 건기 때는 가족이 마을에서 멀리 떨어져 지내야 했기 때문이다.

 

But during the rainy season, he could walk to the school, which was only half an hour from his home.

하지만 우기 때는 집에서 고작 한 시간 반거리 떨어진 학교에 걸어갈 수는 있었다.

 

Salva's father was a successful man. He owned many head of cattle and worked as their village's judge-and honored, respected position.

살바의 아버지는 성공을 한 사람이었다. 소를 많이 쳤고, 마을의 판사로 명예롭고 존경받는 자리였다. 

 

Salva had three brothers and two sisters.

살바는 형제, 자매 모두 다섯 있었다. 

 

As each boy reached the age of about ten years, he was sent off to school. 

사내아이는 10살쯤되면 학교에 보냈다.

 

Salva's older brothers, Ariik and Ring, had gone to school before him; last year, it had been Salva's turn.

형인 아릭과 링은 먼저 학교에 다녔고 작년에 살바 차례가 되었다.

 

His two sisters, Akit and Agnath, did not go to school.

두 누이 아킷과 아그나스는 학교에 다니지 않았다.

 

Like the other girls in the village, they stayed home and learned from their mother how to keep house.

마을에 다른 여자아이들처럼 집에 있으면서 엄마한테 살림하는 법을 배웠다.

 

Most of the time, Salva was glad to be able to go to school.

살바는 대개 학교에 겨우라도 다닐 수 있어서 기뻤다.

 

But some days he wished he were still back at home herding cattle.

그러나 어떤날은 집에서 소 떼나 몰았으면 싶기도 했다.

▶여기서 wish는 가정법이 아닌 시제 일치로 단순 hope의 개념으로 사용한 겁니다.

He and his brothers, along with the sons of his father's other wives, would walk with the herds to the water holes, where there was good grazing.

형제들(아버지의 다른 부인들과 낳은 아들)과 살바는 함께 물가로 가서 소 떼를 몰았다. 그곳에는 소 떼가 풀 뜯기에 좋은 곳이었다. 

 

Their responsibilities depended on how old they were.

나이에 따라 각자의 책임도 달라졌다.

 

Slava's younger brother, Kuol, was taking care of just one cow;like his brothers before him, he would be in charge of more cows every year.

막내 쿠올은 소 한 마리만 책임지면 되었다. 전에 형들처럼 막내도 매년 소 마릿수가 많아지곤 했다.

Before Salva had begun going to school, he had helped look after the entire herd, and his younger brother as well.

살바는 학교 다니기 전에 소 떼와 어린 동생을 돌보는 일을 거들었다.

 

The boys had to keep an eye on the cows, but the cows did not really need much care.
소년들은 소 떼를 지켜보았지만 그렇게 크게 손이 가지는 않았다.

That left plenty of time to play. 
그래서 놀 시간이 많았다.

Salve and the other boys made cows out of clay. 
살바와 형제들은 진흙으로 소 인형을 만들었다.

The more cows you made, the richer you were. 
소 인형이 많을수록, 더 부자였다.

But they had to be fine, healthy animals. 
그렇지만 소가 건강한 모양이어야 했다.

It took time to make a lump of clay look like a good cow. 
진흙 덩어리로 멋진 소를 만들려면 시간이 걸렸다.

The boys would challenge each other to see who could make the most and best cows.
아이들은 누가 가장 많이, 가장 멋진 소를 만드는지 시합을 하곤 했다.

Other times they would practice with their bows and arrows, shooting at small animals or birds.
다른 때는 활과 화살로 작은 동물이나 새를 맞히는 연습을 하곤 했다.

They weren't very good at this yet, but once in a while they got lucky.
아직 실력은 좋지는 않았지만 가끔 운 좋게 명중시키기도 했다.

Those were the best days. 
그런 때는 가장 기분 좋은 날이었다. (그런 때는 잔칫날 같았다.)

When one of them managed to kill a ground squirrel or a rabbit, a guinea hen or a grouse, the boys' aimeles play halted and there was a suddenly a lot of work to do. 
누구 한 명이 땅다람쥐나 토끼, 뿔닭이나 들꿩을 맞히면, 아이들은 하릴없는 장난질을 멈추고 갑자기 분주하게 할 일을 했다.

Some of them gathered wood to build a fire. 
몇 명은 불 피울 나무를 모았다.

Others helped clean and dress the animal. 
다른 아이들은 잡은 동물을 씻어 양념을 했다.

Then they roasted it on the fire.
그런 다음 불에 구웠다.

None of this took place quietly. 
모두들 시끌벅적했다.

Salva had his own opinion of how the fire should be built and how long the meat needed to cook, and so did each of the others.
살바는 어떻게 불을 피워야 하고 얼마나 고기를 구워야 할지 말했고 다른 형제들도 각자 의견을 냈다.

"The fire needs to be bigger."
"불길이 더 쎄야 해."

"It won't last long enough-we need more wood."
"불이 오래가지 않을 거야. 나무가 더 필요해."

"No, it's big enough already."
"아니야. 불은 이 정도면 됐어."

"Quick, turn it over before it's ruined!"
"빨리 고기 타기 전에 뒤집어."

 

The juices drippled and sizzled. A delicious smell filled the air.

육즙이 떨어지면서 지글지글 끓었다. 맛있는 냄새가 공기 중에 가득했다.

 

Finally, they couldn't wait one second longer.

마침내 잠시도 기다릴 수 없었다.

 

There was only enough for each boy to have a few bites, but, oh, how delicious those bites were!

고작 몇 입씩만 돌아갈 뿐이었지만, 아, 살살 녹는 그 맛이란!

 

Salva swallowed and turned his eyes back toward the teacher.

살바는 침을 삼키며 선생님 쪽으로 눈을 돌렸다.

 

He wished he hadn't recalled those times, because the memories made him hungry.... Milk.

그런 시절을 회상하지 말았어야 했는데, 과거의 기억 때문에 배가 고파졌다.... 우유.

When he got home, he would have a bowl of fresh milk, which would keep his belly full until suppertime.

집에 가서 신선한 우유 한 사발을 마시면 저녁까지 배가 부르곤 했다.

 

He knew just how it would be.

살바는 어떻게 될지 잘 알았다.

 

His mother would rise from her work grinding meal and walk around to the side of the house that faced the road.

어머니는 곡식을 빻다가 일어나 길가에 마주한 집 옆 주변을 걷곤 했다.

 

She would shade her eyes with one hand, searching for him.

한 손을 이마에 대고 살바가 오는지 살피곤 했다.

 

From far off he would see her bright orange headscarf, and he would raise his arm in greeting.

살바는 어머니의 밝은 오렌지색 머리두건을 보고 손을 들며 인사를 했으리라.

 

By the time he reached the house, she would have gone inside to get his bowl of milk ready for him.

집에 도착할 때쯤, 어머니는 살바의 우유를 준비하러 안으로 들어갔을 테고.

 

Crack!

꽝!

 

The noise had come from outside.

바깥에서 시끄러운 소리가 났다.

 

Was it a gunshot? or just a car backfiring?

총소리인가? 아님 그냥 자동차 소리?

 

The teacher stopped talking for a moment.

선생님이 잠시 말을 멈추었다.

 

Every head in the room turned toward the window. Nothing. Silence.

교실에 있는 아이들은 창쪽으로 바라보았다. 아무것도 없었다. 조용했다.

 

The teacher cleared his throat, which drew the boys' attention to the front of the room again.

선생님이 헛기침을 했고, 다시 교실 앞쪽으로 아이들은 집중했다.

 

He continued the lesson from where he had left off.

선생님이 하던 이야기를 잇기 시작했다.

Then-CRACK! POP-POP-CRACK!

ACK-ACK-ACK-ACK-ACK-ACK!

Gunfire!

그때였다. 꽝! 탁 탁 꽝!

두두두두두! 총소리!

 

"Everyone, DOWN!" the teacher shouted.

"모두 숙여!" 선생님이 외쳤다.

 

Some of the boys moved at once, ducking their heads and hunching over.

몇 명의 아이들은 동시에 움직여 머리를 숙였고 등을 구부렸다. 

 

Others sat frozen, their eyes and mouths open wide.

다른 아이들은 몸을 꽁꽁 숨기고 눈과 입이 열린 채로 앉아있었다.

 

Salva covered his head with his hands and looked from side to side in panic.

살바는 두 손으로 머리를 감쌌고 겁을 먹고 두리번거렸다.

 

The teacher edged his way along the wall to the window.

선생님은 벽을 따라서 창가로 갔다.

 

He took a quick peek outside. The gunfire had stopped, but now people were shouting and running.

선생님이 재빨리 밖을 살폈다. 총소리는 진즉 멈추었지만, 지금 사람들이 아우성치고 달아나는 소리를 들을 수 있었다.

"Go quickly, all of you, "the teacher said, his voice low and urgent.

"모두들 빨리 나가." 선생님이 낮은 소리로 다급히 말했다.

 

"Into the bush. Do you hear me? Not home. Don't run home. They will be going into the villages. Stay away from the villages-run into the bush."

"숲으로 가. 내 말 들었지? 집에 말고. 집으로 뛰어가면 안 돼. 저들이 마을로 갈 거야. 마을에서 멀찍이 떨어져. 숲으로 뛰어."

 

He went to the door and looked out again. "Go! All of you, now!"

선생님이 문으로 가서 다시 밖을 쳐다보았다. "얼른 가, 지금이야!"

 

The war had started two years earlier.

전쟁은 2년 전에 이미 시작되었다.

Salva did not understand much about it, but he knew that rebels from the southern part of Sudan, where he and his family lived, were fighting against the government, which was based in the north.

살바는 전쟁에 대해 많이 알지 못했지만 남부출신 반군들이 정부에 맞서 싸우고 있었다. 살바와 가족은 수단 남부에 살았는데, 정부의 근거지는 북부였다. 

 

Most of the people who lived in the north were Muslim, and the government wanted all of Sudan to become a Muslim country-a place where the beliefs of Islam were followed.

대개는 북부에 살았던 주민들은 이슬람교였고, 정부는 수단 전체가 이슬람 공동체이길 원했다. 이슬람을 믿는 국가로 말이다.

 

But the people in the south were of different religious and did not want to be forced to practice Islam.

하지만 남부 주민들은 다른 종교를 믿었고 이슬람교 신자로 강제당하고 싶지 않았다.

 

They began fighting for independence from the north.

그들은 북부에서 독립하려고 싸움을 시작했다.

 

The fighting was scattered all around southern Sudan, and now the war had come to where Salva lived. 

그 싸움은 남수단 전체 주변으로 번졌고, 지금 전쟁이 살바가 살고 있는 곳으로 벌어진 것이었다.

 

The boys scrambled to their feet. Some of them were crying.

소년들은 허둥지둥 일어났고, 몇 명은 울어댔다.

 

The teacher began hurrying the students out the door. Salva was near the end of the line.

선생님은 학생들을 문밖으로 서둘러 내보내기 시작했다. 살바는 뒷줄 가까이에 있었다.

 

He felt his heart beating so hard that its pulse pounded in his throat and ears.

살바의 심장은 심하게 요동을 쳐서 목구멍과 귀에 울리는듯했다.

 

He wanted to shout, "I need to go home! I must go home!" But the words were blocked by the wild thumping in his throat.

"집에 가고 싶어요. 집에 가야 돼요."라고 소리치고 싶었지만, 그 말이 목구멍에 걸려 나오지 않았다.

 

When he got to the door, he looked out. Everyone was running-men, childern, women carrying babies.

살바가 문간에서 밖을 볼 때, 모든 사람들이 뛰고 있었다. 어른, 아이, 아기를 업고 있는 아낙네 할 것 없이 말이다.

 

The air was full of dust that had been kicked up by all those running feet.

공기는 모든 사람들이 뛰느라 먼지로 가득했다.

 

Some of the men were shouting and waving guns.

몇 명의 남자 어른은 소리를 치며 총을 흔들었다.

 

Salva saw all this with one glance. Then he was running, too. Running as hard as he could, into the bush.

살바는 이 모든 것이 한눈에 들어왔다. 살바도 뛰기 시작했다. 있는 힘을 다해 숲으로 뛰어 달렸다.

 

Away from home. 

집에서 멀어지고 있었다.

 

챕터 하나가 끝났습니다. 제가 중간중간에 문법 정보를 표시해서 하이라이트를 시켜드렸는데요. 다 하지는 못했습니다. 하나하나 하이라이트 하기 시작하면 모든 문장을 다 표시해야 하기에 대개 놓치는 부분들 위주로 표현을 해두었으니, 참고해 주시기 바랍니다. 아직 문법강의가 안 올라간 부분과 Phrasal Verbs표현 표시는 스킵했습니다. 제가 번역해 드린 부분과 맞추어 보시면서 표현은 영어사전을 통해 꼭 공부해 주시기 바랄게요. 그리고 문법강의가 안 올라가서 하이라이트 안된 부분은 추후에 나올 때마다 업데이트해 드릴 테니 지켜봐 주시면 될듯합니다. 신신당부드리지만 영어구조는 볼 줄 알아야 빨리 읽으실 수 있을 거예요. 왜 이렇게 사용했는지 쉽게 파악하실 수 있을 겁니다.
